Carr looks ahead

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Stephen Carr says the lads can be confident at Charlton tomorrow night after coming through the pressure-cooker atmosphere against Portsmouth on Saturday.

The stand-in skipper was in a reflective mood as he prepared for the Premiership clash at The Valley - the amazing 4-3 games against Pompey and Manchester City still very much fresh in the memory.

"Portsmouth was a tricky game for us after what happened against City," said the Irish favourite. "It was important to win because it felt like it was a game people were waiting for us to lose.

"We put ourselves under so much pressure with everyone waiting to see how we would react, a few nerves did set in but we worked through it and came out winners. Now it's up to us to go on another run."

That win made it four wins in five in the Premiership in 2004 but Stephen is well aware that the disappointment FA Cup defeat still runs deep.

He reiterated the points he made on this website and in the club's official matchday programme on Saturday after the players were criticised for not speaking to the media after that now-famous reverse.

"As I said last week, just because a player doesn't want to speak right after the game doesn't mean he doesn't care. He has his own thoughts on things.

"We were sorry for the fans, the manager and the club and at the end of the day we let ourselves down as much as anyone.

"I don't think we played particularly well against Portsmouth but it was about character and we showed enough to get the win because we were up against it.

"But as far as City is concerned, it's the end of the story now. We have to move on."

We will move on to South London tomorrow night and another London derby against Charlton.

The Addicks have enjoyed a fine season although the weekend's results - Charlton lost 1-0 at Chelsea - see us just seven points behind them.

"It will be a very hard game," added Stephen. "It doesn't matter if you are going there with a few wins, you know what you will get from them.

"They will work hard and they have a bit of quality as well. They have a good mixture.

"They did well last season and have moved on again this season. The lads know it will be tough. Hopefully we can get a win and that will set us up nicely."
