Carr: I daren't watch

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Stephen Carr says he cannot bear to watch Ireland’s crucial World Cup qualifier against Holland on Saturday.

A knee injury has ruled the full-back out of the start of our Premiership campaign and the big one at Lansdowne Road.

A win or draw against the Dutch will all-but guarantee Ireland a play-off place a least.

But Steve will not watch what could be an occasion to remember.

“I’d love to be able to watch it but it’s a bit nerve-wracking watching a game that has so much importance to the country,” he revealed.

“I’ll watch it afterwards if we get the result. I’m confident we’ll get the result but I’m not a great watcher of football. I just hope the lads do well and get the result we need.”

Steve said he was ‘heartbroken’ to miss out. “To miss the start of the season and then to miss this one, so early on, is heartbreaking — but that’s football,” he said.

“As long as we get the result, that’s the main thing. It will be a very, very tough game.

“If we win it or even get a draw, we might then need a win in our last game to get into the play-offs. Even that would be disappointing after being at the top of the group for so long. That would be difficult.

“They will be all out because they have to win it, so I’m sure it will be an entertaining game for the supporters. I don’t care what type of game it is as long as we get the result we need.”

Steve had the chance to watch the Dutch at close quarters when they trained at Spurs Lodge before their recent friendly against England at the Lane.

He added: “Once they have a full team out and play to their potential they are one of the top teams in Europe.

“We matched them over there though and proved we could mix it with the best.

“We’ve done the same against Portugal and got two great results. We can take confidence from that. The game is at Lansdowne Road as well which I’m sure they won’t fancy.

“We have to go into it confident. We are good enough to get a result against them, even beat them.

“Hopefully we’ll perform on the day, get the result and it will all go well. It would be nice to knock the Dutch out. It would be huge compliment to the boys but unless you then go and get to the championships it doesn’t mean anything.”
