Carlo makes it count

Carlo Cudicini was delighted his two fine second half saves counted for something at Newcastle.

Carlo Cudicini was delighted his two fine second half saves counted for something at Newcastle.

The goalkeeper was back in the starting line-up in place of Heurelho Gomes, who was injured in training on Friday.

Carlo was at his best to deny Peter Kovenkrands one-on-one and then tip Shola Ameobi's stinger wide with us trailing 1-0 at St James Park.

We committed more and more players forward in search of the equaliser and finally broke through in added time when Aaron Lennon drove low into the corner for 1-1 and a deserved point.

It would have been a different story but for Carlo’s key saves at 1-0.

“You always hope when you make a save that it will count,” said Carlo. “You think 'I hope that will mean something at the end'.

“But it's also good for the team to come back from 1-0 down, away from home.

“We had to risk something, but we didn't concede too much. They had chances, we had chances and then we scored right at the end, so 1-1 is a good result for us.

“I think overall we definitely deserved a point.

"We did okay in the first half and had a chance right at the end and going 1-0 up would have been much easier. But in the end, it’s a good point.

“We had good possession and had our chances, but in the end 1-1 is probably a fair result.”
