Danny Foster played what his coach Pat Holland described as a 'real captain's role' against Crystal Palace in the FA Youth Cup fifth round tie at Selhurst Park. For his part, the skipper was keen to heap praise on his team-mates.
The Enfield-born central defender was outstanding along with his defensive colleagues in ensuring that the one-goal lead, courtesy of Malcolm Malcolm's tenth minute strike, was protected and a quarter-final tie against either Luton Town or Middlesbrough now awaits.
"It was a good result for the boys and I'm proud of them," said a delighted Danny straight after the game. "We dug in, worked hard and got the result."
Determination and great resolve replaced slick passing and movement as the game wore on and Palace chased an equaliser. The encounter became a little spikey in the second half and Danny feels the team got diverted from their natural game.
"It was down to ourselves really. We should have just kept the ball and played nice and simple. There were a few tackles going in, we got caught up in it and it took us away from our game a little bit.
"The surface was reasonably flat, but not a lot of grass so there was always going to be a slight bobble. It's just a shame we couldn't keep our game of the first fifteen going for the 90 minutes.
"Well done to the lads though, it was a great result and we are through to the next round."
Danny admits that this season's Youth Cup side are on a mission - with an aim to emulate or better the semi-final achievement of last season's team.
"I think that's the way everyone looks at it. You want to do as well as they did last year - and try and go one better this year!
"It's great, what everyone looks forward to, a big night of cup football for us. It is a dream for a young player to play in this competition."
