Captain fantastic!

Harry Redknapp was quick to praise Michael Dawson after the defender's return from injury in Sunday's 1-1 draw against Chelsea.

Harry Redknapp was quick to praise Michael Dawson after the defender's return from injury in Sunday's 1-1 draw against Chelsea.

'Daws' came in for injured William Gallas and was handed the captain's armband for the huge derby against Chelsea in the Barclays Premier League.

It was his first action since damaging his ankle on England duty back in September.

And what a return - up against Nicolas Anelka and then the twin threat of Anelka and Didier Drogba as Chelsea chased an equaliser in the second half.

Roman Pavlyuchenko opened the scoring with a sweet first half strike but Drogba lashed home the leveller in the 70th minute.

That's how it stayed - although Drogba missed a golden chance to take maximum points for the visitors when he was denied from the penalty spot by Heurelho Gomes in injury time.

Michael had only played one training ground friendly before Sunday's return, completing 90 minutes against MK Dons last Wednesday.

"Michael was outstanding," said Harry.

"Younes Kaboul wasn't fit, William Gallas injured a hamstring, so the only centre half we had apart from Sebastien Bassong was Michael.

"It’s his first week back (after injury) and I threw him in at the deep end. What a competitor, what a man. He’s fantastic."
