Cameron relishes Falcao match-up

11 March 2015|Tottenham Hotspur

Cameron Carter-Vickers relished the biggest test of his young career so far against Radamel Falcao at Old Trafford on Tuesday night.

The young defender, just 17, lined-up against the Colombian international in the top-of-the-table clash in the Barclays U21 Premier League against United.

In the end, Cameron and central defensive partner Bongani Khumalo kept the former Porto and Atletico Madrid hitman quiet as the teams fought out a 1-1 draw.

“I was excited and a little nervous, you know how good he is but I couldn’t wait to play against him and just learn from him, to see what he did and to see how I could cope with it,” said Cameron.

“He’s a strong player and when he has the ball at his feet, he doesn’t let you see it, so there is no way you can go in there and nick it. He’s good at using his body like that.

“His movement is really good as well, especially in the box. He always tries to play right on the shoulder, making darting runs for crosses or pulling away for cut backs.

“It was a big game and a great learning curve for me, especially playing alongside Bongani Khumalo, who has fantastic experience.

“We spoke before the match and then afterwards about what we might have done better. It’s been a good night.”

Kenny McEvoy fired us ahead in the 26th minute, Rafael levelled six minutes later and both teams had chances - most notably when Cameron headed against the crossbar in the second half.

United pushed us back in the latter stages but we held firm for a deserved point

“We’re a little disappointed because we all felt we could have created more chances and there were spells in the game when we had them pinned back and we would have liked to have scored again,” added Cameron.
