Colin Calderwood found it hard to fault the performance level of his team in the 3-1 defeat to Southampton.
Our reserve side bossed proceedings for lengthy period of the game and such a scoreline does not do justice to some of the superb football played. This fact gives small comfort to coach Calderwood.
"That's the thing I think we can fall back on a wee bit," reflected Colin. "When people look at the result it won't reflect the periods of good play that we did have.
"Those things are obviously the bits we take out of the game and we think we did fairly well. Our attitude to getting the ball back was very good and a lot of it was alright.
"What we just said to them was 'if you don't go 90 minutes as a group and help one another through, you can get punished'. I think that is what has happened and we've ended up being sloppy on two or three occasions and certainly gave them a hand with their first and second goals."
It was second half goals from Agustin Delgado, Kevin Davies and Chris Baird that turned the tables after Ben Thatcher had fired us into an early lead. Colin was disappointed that the team didn't offer a more positive response after falling behind.
"The goal near the end was loose marking.
"At 2-1 we were looking for a reaction, to try and get something out of the game. If it was at real cutting edge level, that scoreline with a few minutes to go you are not out of it. So you defend that free-kick properly.
"With it ending up 3-1 there are little things that we've really got to look at. We can take a little bit from the game though, because of the good things that we did do."
