Calderwood's call

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Colin Calderwood says playing Arsenal is the ideal incentive for the reserves to put on a show in Thursday evening's clash at Stevenage, kick-off 7pm.

Colin describes playing our nearest and not so dearest at any level as the opportunity to put down a marker of where we want to be.

"It's against our biggest and fiercest rivals," said Colin of the biggest second string fixture of the season. "Irrespective of whether it's first team, reserves, youth team or schoolboys, there is always an excellent incentive for us to go and do well against Arsenal.

"Not just us, but everyone looks at them as one of the leading lights, with them doing well in Europe as well. We've got to try and get to that standard right throughout the club.

"Every time you play them it is a marker for you. I know from speaking to Theo (Foley), Arsenal look at it as a little bit of a marker and always like to beat us. Not only beat us, but they like to beat us well."

A big crowd is expected at Broadhall Way and Colin will be interested to see how some of his players respond to that.

"That would be an added experience for some of them playing in front of a crowd like that. It will be interesting to see how they cope with a crowd like that.

"I don't know what the side will be. If we show the same collective spirit that we had a Charlton last week it will be good - a lot of good things came from that and it could be the same sort of group we have on Thursday night.

"If we get them together, they've obviously played together and can take it on to the next step. I don't know what side Arsenal will have out. They are above us in the league and we'd like to finish above them.

"It is an ideal opportunity to close the gap and get a bit closer to them."

Colin agrees that the results his team achieve need to consistently match the performances given.

"I said that even when the young boys were in the team. Performances were decent, they did themselves no harm and did a lot of good things. But eventually we had to get a win and we did with a young side at Coventry and at Leicester with a little bit more experience.

"At Charlton we deserved to get something from the game and now, if I have the same sort of group, we'll get that wee bit of stability. You can play a little bit more of what you've worked on with set pieces, corners and that sort of thing.

"I don't know what it will be yet, but that would be a help to us. If we have that this week I'm sure we can improve on the performance."
