Calderwood content

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Colin Calderwood was delighted with the performance of the under-18 Academy players in the reserve defeat against Fulham.

On a dry, dusty pitch at Woking the young team, plus a handful of seniors, put on an encouraging display and were unfortunate to come out 3-1 losers after taking the lead through a Stephen Clemence screamer.

The young boys will form Colin's reserve squad next season and will be training with him on a full-time basis and he is certainly heartened by the prospect.

"I thought they did very well in certain situations," reflected Colin. "It was a difficult pitch, a big pitch, and they gave 100 per cent in effort and you can hardly blame them in a lot of the circumstances because of the state of the pitch.

"Anything they lacked in quality on the ball, much of it was down to the pitch.

"It was a battle in the first half and the second half was better. In the first we stopped them getting at us or getting any rythm. It was a credit to the lads playing a slightly different system from what they're used to.

"They took in on board and did the majority of it very well."

None more so that Lee Barnard, playing in particularly unfamiliar right wing-back role.

"He did exceptionally well on the ball in the second half on three or four occasions. In the first he was slightly too advanced, but that is because we never ever have any time to work on it.

"Hopefully next season this group will know how to play different systems and understand it. They'll know when to go and press the ball and when to stay away.

"What you can't fault is the effort and energy they gave. I'm not too disappointed that we lost, particularly in a game like that because it was competitive compared to a lot of reserve games and they stood up for themselves, which was pleasing to see.

"They've got a real willingness to succeed and what they won't lack is 100 per cent effort and that's what they give. Their ability comes out in patches and hopefully gives them confidence.

"I thought Paul O'Donoghue was excellent and Ben Bowditch was disciplined in what we asked him to do.

"I said to them that 99.9 per cent of their game was excellent, but that .1 per cent is a goal. So that takes away 25 per cent of your performance and we've got to get that out of them. You go 90 minutes and your man doesn't score - that's the little tasks we set in front of them."
