Calderwood back for seconds

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Colin Calderwood is relishing the ‘fantastic opportunity’ of taking up the position of reserve team coach in succession to Chris Hughton, who transferred to first team duties in April.

Colin has now been officially installed as coach to the second-string and he enjoyed his first win with the excellent performance at Woking on Tuesday. He will work alongside Theo Foley, who filled the gap with considerable success towards the end of last season and now reverts to his former role.

Senior service boosts Calderwood

Ex-Spurs player Calderwood, an elegant central defender who played for Aston Villa, Portsmouth and Nottingham Forest after leaving the Lane, had his career ended by injury early last season while at the City Ground.

He is now back and charged with steering our young reserve side towards improvement and possible first team duty.

"I don’t really see it as too much of a challenge," said Colin, who admits to hankering after a coaching role for some time. "I see it as more of a fantastic opportunity.

"Whatever I think of myself at the minute, I’ll be a better coach in 12 months time. Really, towards the end of my playing career, I’d rather have been on the management or coaching side.

"I’ve landed on my feet, coming back to where I was before. It’s a very nice environment, I’m going to have a very good group of boys and I’ve got to prove my worth by making them slightly better in what they do on the pitch and what they do off the pitch.

"I regard myself as very fortunate to have the chance of being offered the job. The timing of me finishing last year and this coming off… I’ve landed on my feet, I know I have.

"I’ve got to prove I can justify the appointment and put my theories to the test a little bit. I want to educate myself, become a good coach, become better."

Colin was at pitchside with Theo for the reserves opening two games, defeat at Barnet and a heavy loss at Arsenal. However, he looks at the positive side of those games.

"They were difficult games the first two with younger squads because of so many players going to the first team games, but that’s going to be a benefit to them. It’s a benefit to play against players who are older and a bit more physical.

"And because you’ve got a Tottenham Hotspur shirt on with a badge on, one or two people want a wee bit of you.

"Irrespective of how many times you’ve played in the first team or not, you are still playing for Tottenham Hotspur and people love to go away thinking they’ve beaten us."

One thing is for sure, Colin will find working alongside wise old head Theo an experience in itself.

"Oh yes, the banter is quite good. Not that I understand too much and he doesn’t understand too much of me."
