Buchler: 'Money available'
Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).
Our executive vice-chairman, David Buchler, revealed that funds were available for our new era under Glenn Hoddle at the Lane.
David said: “There is money available, and we have talked about what we want to do and how to do it. Those talks were not different to the ones I had with George Graham, but the effect is different.
“It is about how to get constant success back to the club. It is not just about a monetary figure and how we spend it.
“It needs to be about how we grow as a club over the next five and 10 years to get that level of consistency. We have to invest not only in the first-team squad but also in other areas, like the Academy.”
Meanwhile, David was keen to point out that there was nothing underhand about how Glenn Hoddle had been brought to the club. “We tried to play this by the book,” he said.
“We asked for permission on Monday to approach and (Southampton chairman) Rupert Lowe said he wanted to ask Glenn first and then gave us permission at quarter-to-eleven on Tuesday morning.
“We got a fax to give us permission to approach him and arranged a meeting for tea-time on Tuesday.
“That went on until two o'clock in the morning, and it was not until then that we all shook hands and finished the negotiations.
“The next few days have been to dot the 'is' and cross the 'ts'.
“Southampton were due compensation, and money was placed by us to the Premier League so that Southampton can be compensated.
“There were terms that Glenn had to agree with Southampton as well, and we were waiting for documentation to come through so we could agree it all. We only got the last one through half-an-hour to 45 minutes ago.
“We agreed that documentation, and the finality will be on Monday morning. That will be an end of it.”
