Executive vice-chairman David Buchler has revealed that he exchanged "hard words" with George Graham ahead of his decision to part company with the manager.

"It is very difficult and the timing couldn`t have been more difficult," stressed Buchler. "I am coming into a situation where I have been here for ten days, and a lot of things have been going on.

"I got to have discussions with David Pleat and George Graham which dealt with all aspects of the club in terms of strategy, the money available and the possibility of signing new players.

"Then I discovered the totality of these discussions plastered all over the press this morning.

"It is outrageous and you can`t run a club unless it is a cohesive unit - from the management at director level and team level.

"There was nothing cohesive about this relationship from Tottenham`s point of view. If George Graham is happy to discuss club matters in the press, he can, but I want it dealt with within the club and not in the press."

Buchler admitted there had been something of a row, when he confronted Graham and asked him to explain the reasons why he spoke to the media about the meeting this week.

"I asked him to talk about it and have a discussion," he told TV. "But I tell you he was totally defiant and felt he had done nothing wrong with it, and nothing improper.

"Hard words were used and, from the club`s point of view, we have to have a cohesive team from top to bottom.

"There has to be another reason, in my view, why these statements were made the same day as I started discussions with Sol Campbell`s agent Sky Andrew.

"You have to question the whole timing as it is very difficult. These are very important times for the club.

"It is a great shame.

"This was not a change I would have made voluntarily at this stage and I would not have sought George Graham leaving. He had another year on his contract and maybe that would have been a more appropriate time to discuss things.

"When you get club affairs all over the press it undermines the ambition that does exist here, with regard to player`s contract talks, the priority has to be the good of the club.

"All great names have been linked but I haven`t spoken to any other manager. No-one is lined up.

"I will be discussing the situation with Daniel Levy over the next week or two."
