Clive Allen described Dimitar Berbatov's performance against Bolton as 'sensational'.

Our development coach is no stranger with the position Dimitar was left in following Robbie Keane’s sending off on Sunday – he played much of his famous 49-goal season at Spurs in the 1986-87 campaign as the lone striker in a 4-5-1 system.

We were 3-0 up when Keano was sent off but with the scoreline back to 3-1 following Bolton's penalty, Berba flourished in the lone role, working Bolton’s defence, holding the ball up, creating chances out of nothing for himself and his team-mates and finally involved in the fourth goal as Aaron Lennon completed the scoring in the final minute.

“I thought it was a sensational performance,” said Clive. “It’s certainly the best he’s given us this season and showed what he’s capable of.

“He held the ball up superbly well, at times he was isolated with two or three defenders around him but he showed clever movement and unbelievable touch, he was completely in control of the ball and therefore was able to link up when we were short of numbers. It was a wonderful display.

“He’s been linking well with Robbie, Mido’s done well when he’s been introduced and what you have is healthy competition for places.

"Everyone is keen to play and score goals and that’s exactly how you want it.”
