Brad's 25-year best

Brad Friedel's 14 clean sheets in the Premier League last season represents a 25-year best in league action.

The goalkeeper took the tally to 14 in the last match of the campaign with a number of fine saves to deny Fulham and secure a 2-0 win at the Lane.

We've had a number of seasons with 13 clean sheets in recent years - including 2004-05, 2005-06, 2008-09 and 2009-10 - but Brad's 14 was last bettered in 1986-87, when Ray Clemence kept 19 clean sheets in league action.

That was the season where the team flourished under David Pleat's new playing system of 4-5-1 with Clive Allen grabbing 49 goals.

We finished third in the old Division One, lost in the final of the FA Cup and reached the semi-finals of the League Cup.

Looking back through our history to when we first played in the Football League in 1908-09, 14 clean sheets has only been bettered on nine occasions, including 16 in that first campaign in the old Division Two in 1908-09.

The record is 21 clean sheets in 1970-71 with the great Pat Jennings in goal.

Look out tomorrow for Brad's thoughts on his 25-year best...
