Brad - I'm ready

15 May 2015|Tottenham Hotspur

Brad Friedel says he’s ‘mentally ready’ to call time on his fantastic career.

The goalkeeping legend is hanging up his gloves as he gets ready to turn 44 this weekend - over 20 years, 729 appearances and 82 caps since he first started out in the game.

The final 67 of those matches have been for Spurs after he joined us from Aston Villa in the summer of 2011, during which time he extended his record run of consecutive starts in the Premier League to an incredible 310.

Working closely with Hugo Lloris and Michel Vorm this term, the former US international has been on the bench on a number of occasions throughout the campaign.

And he says now feels like the right time to bring the curtain down on his illustrious playing career, with the highly respected stopper set to return home to America to become an analyst, pundit and co-commentator for US channel Fox Sports. He will also be our Club Ambassador in the United States.

"I’m mentally ready to stop playing," said the former Liverpool, Blackburn and Villa custodian.

"The decision was made some time ago but that didn’t stop me from wanting to be fit, playing and trying to do the best I can.

"I can’t see myself missing playing, although maybe turning up every day and having a laugh with the boys - perhaps I'll miss that.

"If I’d have retired 10 years ago I would have been a very happy man just to have been able to come and play in the Premier League, which I consider the most competitive league in the world, for as long as I have - it’s been an absolute honour.

"I knew this day would come, it’s inevitable and I’m 44 on Sunday, so I couldn’t be happier with how things have panned out."
