Borussia Dortmund v Spurs - Mauricio's preview

10 March 2016|Tottenham Hotspur

Mauricio Pochettino welcomes the challenge of facing 'one of the best teams in Europe' tonight in Dortmund.

The iconic 80,000-capacity Westfalenstadion, now known at Signal Iduna Park, plays host to the first leg of our Europa League, Round of 16 tie.

Champions League finalists in 2013, Borussia Dortmund are currently chasing down Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich with a run of six wins and two draws in their last eight league matches cutting Bayern's lead to five points.

As we all know, back in the Premier League, we're second with the best defensive record and goal difference having lost just four of 29 matches so far – Borussia Dortmund have lost three of 25 and scored 59 goals.

"This is a big game against one of the best teams in Europe, there will be a great atmosphere in the stadium and it's another competitive game," said Mauricio.

"Borussia Dortmund have very good players, a good team, a great coach in Thomas (Tuchel), he’s been fantastic from the start of the season for Dortmund.

"I like the way they play and it’s a good challenge for us. We know the names, Aubameyang, Mkhitaryan, Hummels, all big, international players.

"We’re excited to play against Dortmund in a great stadium with a great atmosphere and it’s all positive. We play to win and there will be a lot of positive things to take out of this tie."

One thing is for sure, and that is you cannot underestimate the importance of the away leg in these ties where scoring a goal can really put you in the driving seat – just as we did against Fiorentina in the Round of 32.

"The away leg is always very important – important to score, important to get a positive result. It’s true the tie is over two legs but it’s key to get a good result in the first leg and we will try to do our job."
