Bill's big night

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Bill Nicholson, OBE, and his double winning team were last night inducted into the Tottenham Hotspur Hall of Fame following a special dinner at White Hart Lane.

It was the first Hall of Fame dinner staged and, naturally, Bill was the first inductee in front of a packed Whites Suite including eight members of his double-winning side. He was presented with an engraved decanter to mark the occasion by chairman Daniel Levy before host John Motson announced that the late Danny Blanchflower and John White were also to be inducted.

It was then revealed that Bill Brown, who was unable to make it over from his home in Canada, and the double winners who were in attendance on the night are also to take their place in the Hall of Fame.

The evening was hosted by veteran BBC commentator Motson, while video compilations of games from the sixties and seventies - with voice-overs from Alan 'Fluff' Freeman - were played between courses.

After dinner, Motty got the thoughts of Steve Perryman, Martin Chivers, Cliff Jones, Dave Mackay and Pat Jennings on the great Bill, before comedian Bobby Davro conducted a raffle and auction to raise money for a special FITC scheme.

To cap a memorable evening, Bill himself took to the stage to thank everyone for attending and making it such a special night.

"I am grateful for this marvellous tribute but I am not sure what I have done to deserve it," claimed a modest Bill. "But I am glad that you all feel that I warrant such a reception!

"What was achieved at that time was down to the players and staff plus a lot of hard work. This club has been my life and will always remain so."
