Bill Nick legacy lives on through Bursary Scheme

Gary Mabbutt attended an event held to celebrate the success of the Bill Nicholson Bursary Scheme, which is now entering its fifth year.

The scheme is funded by the Bill Nicholson Memorial Fund, set up by the family of the legendary former manager to provide opportunities for young people from Haringey to gain coaching qualifications in football and other sport.

Participants are given the necessary funding to achieve FA Level 1 and 2 qualifications or become Sports Coach UK Tutors through the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation.

The scheme has also supported individuals to achieve various qualifications in sports such as basketball and cricket over recent years.

It is anticipated that between 70 and 80 individuals will gain a qualification via the scheme by the end of 2013.

Former Club captain ‘Mabbsy’ handed out awards to those who have gained coaching qualifications so far, and also gave a Q&A on the importance of coaching during his illustrious playing career.

“I was delighted to be asked to present the Awards at the 2013 Bill Nicholson Bursary Scheme prize giving event,” said Gary. “Bill was a wonderful man and a fantastic coach; it’s extremely fitting that a programme designed to provide people in Haringey with the chance to become a qualified football coach should bear his name.”
