He also played 119 times for Northern Ireland, including two World Cups.
He made such an impact at Watford after moving from Newry Town in 1963 that Bill Nicholson splashed out £27,000 for a 19-year-old with only 48 league appearances behind him. It proved to be one of the legendary manager's greatest-ever signings.
In his time at White Hart Lane, Pat won the FA Cup in 1967, League Cup in 1971 and 1973, UEFA Cup in 1972 and on a personal level, the PFA (1975-76) and Football Writers' Player Of The Year (1972-73) Awards.
Pat is now a goalkeeping consultant at the club and is still out there where it matters, on the training ground at Spurs Lodge, come wind, rain or shine.
Here is his first column...
IT'S 40 YEARS since I arrived at Watford from Newry Town. It's absolutely frightening where the time goes.
I still love being at Spurs. I'm at Spurs Lodge twice a week and I do the hospitality at White Hart Lane on matchdays. It's great to be involved.
As I look back, apart from the money, I don't really think too much has changed in those years. The same demands are on the players - they have to perform and produce results.
That certainly hasn't changed even from when I first arrived at Spurs in 1964. We were following the double side, the FA Cup in 1962 and success in Europe in 1963 so even second place felt like failure.
As we all know, the Premiership starts on Saturday. There are no easy games anymore and the lads are prepared for a tough encounter at Birmingham. We've a lot of injuries but thankfully they don't look like long-term injuries, so hopefully we'll see a few lads back for Leeds.
A good start is always important and as long as we can go there and avoid defeat, it will be a good start. That's how we always planned it - get a point away from home and win the home games.
Looking at the goalkeepers as we go into the new season, I would say there are no bad goalkeepers in the Premiership. Manchester United are the team who have made changes in that area with the arrival of Tim Howard, but Fabien Barthez, Roy Carroll and Ricardo are all still there as well. I don't know who will get that number one shirt at Old Trafford but they certainly have enough quality there.
Obviously, Peter Schmeichel is no longer around after some fantastic years in the Premiership. Possibly he felt standards were slipping slightly and you want to get out with your reputation intact. I think it was a good decision.
I went up to Lilleshall in the summer for a coaching seminar and David Seaman was there. He looked as good as ever. Arsenal have allowed him to leave and he looks like he could play another season no problems.
I was lucky enough to play against Brazil in the World Cup on my 41st birthday. It just shows you - I was written off at 32, 33. If you are fit there is no reason why you can't carry on as long as you have the ambition to do it.
All the best,
Pat
<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
