Big Chiv hits 70!

Mon 27 April 2015, 10:00|Tottenham Hotspur

Happy birthday to our legendary former striker Martin Chivers, who is 70 today (Monday, April 27).

Third in our list of all-time top goalscorers, Martin scored 174 goals in 367 appearances for us between 1968-76.

He scored both goals as we lifted the League Cup against Villa at Wembley in 1971 and then struck twice again in the first leg as we beat Wolves over two legs to win the UEFA Cup for the first time in 1972. He helped us win the League Cup again in 1973 and is our record goalscorer in the competition.

In the week where newly-crowned PFA Young Player of the Year Harry Kane became the first Spurs to hit 30 goals in all competitions, it was a feat achieved by Martin in 1971-72 (42 goals) and 1972-73 (33) while he also struck 29 in 1970-71.

Capped 12 times by England, Martin remains a regular at the Lane where he's a popular member of our matchday hospitality team.

Pat Jennings - who turns 70 in June - was with Martin every step of the way.

"Martin was a fantastic player, unbelievable," said the goalkeeping great. "He had all the talent in the world.

"He hit an absolute rocket at Wolves in the UEFA Cup Final in 1972 and that’s what he was capable of. He was lighting quick as well and was all about total power, a great shot in both feet, he could hold it up, he could play. He could do it all.

"He also played a huge part in what I always thought was the greatest night I had when we needed to stay up and we beat Leeds in 1975. They were in the European Cup Final that year and Chiv scored that night after coming back from a serious injury. What a player."
