Benoit ready for 'special nights' as we meet Inter again
Benoit Assou-Ekotto tells tonight's official programme that our Europa League tie with Inter Milan could be just as special as our Champions League encounters against the Serie A giants in 2010.
Few will forget those epic clashes - Gareth Bale's hat-trick in the San Siro for 4-3 as we came back from 4-0 down with 10 men followed by one of the glory, glory nights, a 3-1 victory over the then European champions at the Lane.
Now we meet again in the Round of 16 of the Europa League with the first leg at the Lane tonight and the return at the San Siro on Thursday week, March 14.
"We have a little history with Inter from our Champions League matches and I think these matches now will also be special as those ones before were," said Benoit.
"Inter are a big club, they will be coming here to win and they want to win the Europa League, like we do too.
"It is good to play top teams in this competition like Lyon and Inter Milan because they feel like Champions League matches anyway, they are exciting games and the atmosphere will be special again tonight I’m sure.
"I can remember being 3-0 down in the San Siro after 20 minutes and I was worried! We were in a bad way and I thought we could end up losing by five or six goals. I’m sure people were watching and thinking that Tottenham were not ready to play in the Champions League.
"But we fought back to 4-3 and showed our quality with only 10 men and since that night, we have picked up a lot of experience and we have improved. It was also the night that Europe started to know the name of Gareth Bale and he has gone up a few levels since then.
"It was the same for him here at the Lane in the second game and that was a great result for us that night. Hopefully tonight the atmosphere will be fantastic again and we can produce another great performance."
