Benji Stambouli helped us reach the last eight of the Capital One Cup and declared: “We have to believe we can get to Wembley.”
The midfield combatant played 90 minutes as we swept aside Brighton & Hove Albion in the fourth round of the Capital One Cup at White Hart Lane on Wednesday night, Erik Lamela and Harry Kane scoring second half goals to give us a 2-0 win.
No sooner had the final whistle blown, we learned we’ll face Premier League rivals Newcastle United at home in the fifth round – with Benji determined to see us make further progress in a bid to get our hands on some silverware.
“It was good to be back out there,” said Benji, in action for the first time since our Europa League draw with Besiktas at the start of October.
“It was enjoyable because we won and we played well, so that’s a good thing.
“I said at the end of the game to all my team-mates that we have to believe that we can get to Wembley. We need to have it in our heads that we can go all the way.”
Nobody needs reminding of what happened when we faced our fifth round opponents in the Premier League on Sunday and Benji, for one, would love to see us right the wrongs of last weekend when we meet the Magpies in December.
“In life you get second chances and we’ve got this opportunity against Newcastle to get revenge because they beat us recently,” added the 24-year-old.
“We’re at home again and we have to believe in ourselves. With the fans behind us we can reach the semi-finals with a win.
“Anything can happen in the cup but if we are strong and we are confident then we should have no fear of any team. Newcastle beat Man City in this round so we have to believe.”
