Benfica vs Spurs - travel advice

Thu 20 March 2014, 09:10|Tottenham Hotspur

Advice for our supporters making the trip to Lisbon for our Europa League Round of 16, second leg on Thursday night.

Spurs fans travelling to Lisbon will find a busy, historic City and will be able to enjoy numerous restaurants and cafes available, together with tourist sites, museums and shopping areas.

For those fans arriving independently, there are excellent transport links from the Airport to the City Centre.Fans arriving via the official day trip package with Thomas Cook will be dropped off at Praca do Rossio at approx. 9:30am.

Your coaches will depart to the Stadium from this point at 4:00pm, please listen to the information given to you on arrival and do not be late back to the coaches as they cannot wait for you.

On arrival at the Stadium, the coaches will be parked close to the visitor’s entry gates and will remain here until departure post-match. Once again, we would stress, please do not be late back to the coaches as they will not be able to wait for you.

Praca do Rossio is a square where many football fans gather and you will find the cafes and restaurants here to suit all tastes and budgets. Previous visiting fans have caused issues with traffic, so please remain in the Square and respect those who live and work in the area to prevent Police intervention.

Please be alert to the fact that pick pockets operate in busy areas, do not venture into secluded areas alone and be careful if taking money out of ATM’s. Ensure that you keep your Passports safe at all times during your visit.

For those travelling by Metro to the Stadium, please go to Colegio Militar as this is the nearest stop to Gate 23, the visitor's section.

The Stadium will now open at 4:30pm - not 4:00pm as originally advised - and THFC Stewards will be there to welcome you and assist you with any issues you may have. It has been suggested that fans should arrive early to avoid delays in searching and entry once kick off approaches.

On arrival at the Stadium, these arriving independently, should make their way to Gate 23 - 'Away Fans Entrance' - where a search will be made by home Stewards. Please be aware that the usual prohibited items will apply, but they will also not allow umbrellas or large bags.

If you are travelling by official transport, please leave bags on your coach with permission of the driver - please note however that THFC and Thomas Cook accept no responsibility for these items.

If you are staying in Lisbon after the match, please only take with you what you require for the game.

There will be a number of THFC Stewards in the searching area and if you have any problems, please approach them and they will assist. Flags and banners are welcome, but will be checked prior to entry. It is common policy and normal ground rules at football stadiums in the UK and elsewhere in Europe, that flags of an overtly religious/sectarian/political nature will not be permitted and may be confiscated - please respect this request.

Also, a reminder that large objects, musical instruments and luggage will not be permitted to enter, please leave on your coaches or at your hotel.

Fans requiring the Disabled Area should go to Gate 32, where they will be greeted by the THFC Disabled Liaison Officer. Your area is on level 0, where there are welfare facilities available.

The Estadio do Luz is a new Stadium and the facilities are excellent, with plenty of welfare facilities available. The seated area has excellent site lines, but there is a net that hangs from top to bottom to prevent items being thrown. The first six rows will not be used and you can place banners and flags in this area, which is also a working area for Stewards and Police.

It is highly likely that THFC fans will be held back for up to 40 minutes - PLEASE remain seated and await departure, which will be quicker if the behaviour is satisfactory. The local Police will be supervising the hold-back, please listen and adhere to all instructions. Welfare facilities will be available to you throughout the hold back period.

The club is rightly proud of good behaviour during previous European travels and we would ask that you uphold this by respecting local amenities and cultures. Please do not place flags on local statues or historic monuments, including architecture as this may offend local inhabitants.

Do remember to have the right Travel Insurance prior to travelling.

If you experience any problems whilst in Lisbon, please call the Travel Line - 07917 880445 - and we will endeavour to assist.

Finally remember that you are an ambassador for the Club and we would respectfully request that you behave accordingly throughout the entirety of your visit.
