Bench impress Andre

Andre Villas-Boas praised the impact of the bench as we scrapped to a vital 1-0 win against Southampton on Saturday.

The Saints impressed and made it tough for us, pressing high up the pitch and refusing to let us settle into any rhythm as chances were at a premium at the Lane.

They actually created the best chance of the first half when Hugo Lloris did well to touch Ricky Lambert's free-kick onto the post.

Lewis Holtby was on by then as Mousa Dembele limped out of the action and the arrival of Emmanuel Adebayor and Gylfi Sigurdsson certainly coincided with us starting to crank up the pressure.

That pressure finally told four minutes from time when Gareth Bale unleashed the winner.

"Siggy came on and did really well, Adebayor was absolutely amazing, great on the pressing, great on holding up the ball, which we needed," said Andre.

"Holtby as well, in a 4-4-2, a different position than the one he’s been playing, he showed great tactical awareness."

Andre was also delighted to keep a clean sheet. "That was very important for the confidence of the team," he added. "We dealt well with the set-plays."
