Ben on Belgium battle

Ben Davies anticipates an interesting battle with three of his Club team-mates with Euro 2016 qualification hotting up.

Our Welsh international left-back helped his nation give a significant boost to their hopes of reaching next year’s tournament finals with a 3-0 victory against previously unbeaten Israel last week.

That result saw them proudly sitting atop Group B – until Belgium leapfrogged the Welsh into pole position on Tuesday night after themselves beating Israel.

With two guaranteed qualifying spots available in the group, both Wales and Belgium – who include Jan Vertonghen, Nacer Chadli and Mousa Dembele among their number – are in the driving seat to book their place at the finals.

But with Israel, Cyprus, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Andorra still in the mix, Ben knows there’s still work to do if he, Jan, Nacer and Mousa are to be on the plane to France next summer.

“At the start of the group everybody fancied Belgium to be the top dogs and they’ve been pretty good so far, but we’ve got a tough game coming up against them in June,” he said.

“We’re confident that we can go into it and give it a good go ourselves, so if we do that then we should be in a good situation in the group.

“As far as qualifying goes, I think if Belgium can take points off the teams around us and if we can pick up some more wins, it should be good news for us in the long-run.”

So what would it mean for Ben to help Wales qualify?

“It would be huge! It would be one of the best moments in my career so far because we haven’t qualified for a major tournament in a very long time, so if we could do that it would be a very proud moment.”
