Ben hopes versatility counts

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Ben Thatcher is hoping his versatility will help in his bid to become part of Glenn Hoddle's plans.

Defender 'Thatch' has just returned from a nightmare 10-month stint on the sidelines.

Things have changed during his absence. George Graham, who spent £6million for his services last summer, departed at the end of last season and now Ben has to prove himself all over again to his new boss.

He explained: "It's difficult when you are out injured and another manager comes in because you are not able to impress. You are just a name on a sheet.

"When you get your chance you have to be able to perform. Once I've had a few games with the reserves and get my sharpness back I'll look to be involved again.

"I'd like to play as centre-back to the left of a three and if he plays a flat back four I can play left-back as well. There are a couple of options from me for him.

"We've got a lot of quality there already and we've brought in Dean Richards as well.

"There are a couple of injuries but hopefully they will be back before too long.

"It's a great squad to be honest. We've gone from being quite bare to having a full shelf."

Ben completed his first 90 minutes of competitve action since last November for the reserves against Leicester City on Monday night.

And the hip problems that eventually required surgery in May finally looked to be a thing of the past as he charged up and down the left flank.

All he wants now is to steer clear of further problems. "I'm back and now it's my chance to show everyone what I can do," he added. "I've missed a lot of football that I can't get back and now I want to steer clear of injuries for the next few years."
