Ben back in big time

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Ben Thatcher reflected on his first competitive action for nearly a year and described himself as ‘delighted’.

After five games for Colin Calderwood’s reserve side, Christian Ziege’s slight knee injury opened the way for Ben to step back into the first team picture and play his first game for Glenn in the 4-0 win over Tranmere in the Worthington Cup.

Ben, who suffered from groin and abdominal problems last season, completed the full 90 minutes and was grateful for the early sending-off that eased the intensity of the game.

“ I was delighted to be involved,” said Ben. “The gaffer told me I was starting the day before the game and I was excited to be back.

“I’ve played a few reserve games now, fitness is getting there and as the game went, it was probably ideal with the early sending off and them going down to 10 men.

“I’ve had no problems. I was breathing a little heavy in the first 15 minutes but it was good.”

Ben can pat himself on the back for his part of a team performance that saw a clean sheet kept and he reveals he was determined to seize his opportunity.

“There was a chance there tonight with injuries and any of the lads who aren’t involved, as soon as they get their chance, they have to take it with both hands.

“It was a good result for me, 4-0, clean sheet, the gaffer will be happy and that’s all we can hope for really. I’m sure a few people would have fancied a shock here.”

Ben sees the value of the Worthington Cup, pointing out that it leads to a major final and a place in Europe.

“It’s an important competition for us. There is a door into Europe and if the draw is kind you can go all the way. There is a medal up for grabs and a final at Cardiff. It’s a big competition. We’re only in three this year so it would be great to win one of them.”
