Belief the key for JD

30 July 2013|Tottenham Hotspur

Jermain Defoe hopes his hat-trick in Hong Kong will open the floodgates in 2013-14.

The striker was in lethal form in front of goal to bag his treble as we finished the Barclays Asia Trophy in style with a 6-0 win against South China FC on Saturday night.

It might have been more - JD hit the post in the first half, was denied twice by fine saves from Zhang Chunhui and then missed a header in the latter stages!

“I wanted that fourth goal!” said Jermain, who will kick-off next term joint-seventh in our all-time goalscoring list.

"In my experience over the years when you score goals they just keep coming.

“When you’ve have a good pre-season and you are scoring goals, that takes you into the season.

“It’s important to have the confidence as a striker that when you get a chance, you believe you are going to score.

“When you’ve got that belief, good things happen.

“Hopefully when the season starts I’ll continue scoring. That would be great.”

Jermain is currently on 133 goals for us, level with Alan Gilzean. Six more and he’ll leapfrog Gilzean, Len Duqemin (134) and George Hunt (138) for a place our all-time top five.

The top four are Cliff Jones (159), Martin Chivers (174), Bobby Smith (208) and Jimmy Greaves (266).
