Bale: Look out for Pav

Gareth Bale believes Spurs fans have something to look forward to with the arrival of Roman Pavlyuchenko.

Gareth Bale believes Spurs fans have something to look forward to with the arrival of Roman Pavlyuchenko.

The Russian international striker joined us at the end of the transfer window and was on target against Gareth and Chris Gunter's Wales in a World Cup qualifier on Wednesday before all three returned to Spurs Lodge for training on Friday.

It was Roman's first day in a Spurs kit alongside fellow newcomer Vedran Corluka from Manchester City.

Roman impressed both Gareth and Chris with his movement and strength up front in rain-soaked conditions in Moscow.

"He was up front on his own and played well," said Gareth, outstanding himself in both of Wales' qualifying matches in the last week. "He held the ball up well, looked lively and obviously scored the penalty against us in the first half.

"Tottenham fans certainly have something to look forward to.

"I spoke to him before and after and he's looking forward to playing for Spurs."

Gareth suffered personal heartbreak against the Russians when he missed a penalty in the first half but made amends in the second half by setting up the equaliser for Joe Ledley.

Russia won it with a goal eight minutes from time and both Gareth and Chris played 90-minute shifts in both matches, Wales winning the first against Azerbaijan on Saturday.

"They were both going to be tough games for different reasons," reflected full-back Gareth. "We were expected to beat Azerbaijan but they made it hard for us, they sat in tight and perhaps we should have scored more than the one goal but their keeper was one of the best players on the pitch.

"Russia was obviously a hard game as well. They are one of the best teams in the world at the moment. We gave it our best shot but we just fell short at the final hurdle."

There was one more question for Gareth - did he feel fit after those two matches with Villa arriving at the Lane on Monday?

"I feel fine, I feel fresh - as good as ever. I'll be ready."
