August Hotspur - out now

Gylfi Sigurdsson and Jan Vertonghen both recall how much they enjoyed watching Spurs in TV action as children while growing up in their respective homelands.

With the Premier League the most popular division across Europe, our two new signings admit that they were not just attracted to the English game – but to Spurs in particular.

Featured in the August issue of our ever-popular official monthly magazine Hotspur, the pair recall their early days in Iceland and Belgium when watching Tottenham from afar was part of their footballing education.

Says Jan: “My feeling for Tottenham was perfect. I loved to see them play. They never played the English way - like kick and rush - and that is how I wanted to play.”

Adds Gylfi: “At home in Iceland I’ve been watching the Premier League since I was eight or 10-years-old and I always knew of Tottenham and their great history.

“When I heard about Spurs and of their interest in me, I was very excited. Just look at the club and the players. It is a fantastic club with a lot of ambition and world class players. Now I want to do nothing but look ahead."

Vertonghen also tells Hotspur of his confidence that he can quickly enjoy success at Tottenham.

“I’ve been well aware in the last years that Spurs have become a very big club in England,” he says. “For me, this is one of the biggest clubs in the Premier League and that’s one of the reasons I wanted to move here.

“There is a lot of quality here and everyone wants to make it another good season. That is our goal and it had to always be that way because Tottenham is a big team.”

Both players say how much they are enjoying working with our new Head Coach Andre Villas-Boas and naturally he too is featured in detail in our latest magazine.

He tells Hotspur: “It is fantastic to come to a club with such high ambitions for the future. This club needs to be winning trophies.

“This is a club of great tradition and dimension. For me, it is a privilege and an honour to be given this position and this squad, after what they did wonderfully last season and in the seasons before.”

Read the full interviews in the new issue where we all meet Andre’s new coaching team and chat with Gareth Bale, Kyle Walker, Tom Huddlestone and Steven Caulker.

There is also a special focus on a special player - Ledley King, who has announced his retirement - but will be staying with us in his new and wide-ranging role as Club Ambassador.

We take a closer look at our new Under Armour playing kit and profile all the clubs in the Europa League challenge next season.

In his exclusive column, Ossie Ardiles welcomes Andre Villas-Boas with the words: “I look at him and see a guy who wants to bring success to the club and, with his ability and drive, I am confident he will.”

On the nostalgia front, we look back with Terry Gibson and Paul Allen. We also catch up with the latest action involving our Spurs Legends side who have been playing on Hackney Marshes - and in Barbados! And we detail just about every Spurs player still involved in the game in our special ‘Life after the Lane’ feature.

We also get the Olympic spirit as we speak with Team GB’s Danny Rose and Steven Caulker while Sandro’s Brazil have a real look of gold about them!

Author Dan Freedman tells us why he is a Spurs fan; John White is remembered at Crews Hill Golf Course; and we preview the new season as we look at the sides we’re up against in August as the marathon gets underway.
