Athletic Bilbao 1-1 Spurs XI - match report
16 October 2013|Tottenham Hotspur
Our Development Squad registered a hard-fought 1-1 draw in a friendly against a strong Athletic Bilbao side at the Athletic Club Sport Centre on Wednesday evening.
Chris Ramsey’s side had to settle for a draw in a fiercely competitive encounter in the north of Spain, which saw us have three goals disallowed by the officials.
Cameron Lancaster opened the scoring after showing great ability to control Milos Veljkovic’s cross on his chest before turning sharply and finishing into the bottom left corner.
Nathan Oduwa, a threat throughout, was unfortunate not to double our lead as he was adjudged to have been in an offside position before finding the top corner with a left footed strike from outside the penalty area.
Bilbao came out fighting in the second half and levelled the scores in the 49th minute before Lawrence Vigouroux produced an outstanding fingertip save to prevent the hosts taking the lead.
However, it was our lads that could have won the game in the latter stages as Kenneth McEvoy, and then Cameron Lancaster with a header in the dying seconds, saw their efforts ruled out by the linesman.
Reflecting on the game, Chris said: “It was a very difficult match to get a foot-hold in but these are the type of games that we need to participate in for the players to develop.
“We are used to having the majority of possession in matches and this was a different challenge for our players from which they came out very much in credit.”
The lads return to Barclays Under-21 Premier League action against Leicester City on Monday, October 21, at the Training Centre.
Spurs: Miles (Vigouroux 46), Fredericks, Ball, Stewart, Ogilvie (Ward 58), Veljkovic, Bentaleb, Onomah (Lameiras 61), Oduwa, McEvoy, Lancaster.
