Armstrong on song

English Barclays Premiership

Chris Armstrong picked up where he left off in Scandinavia. The striker provided one of the stories of last season when he bounced back from intense criticism to bag nine goals in his last 13 Premiership games.

Now he has got his first uninterrupted pre-season programme in three years off to the perfect start with four goals in thre friendlies against Swedish sides Skellestea and Bodens BK, and Finlanders Tervarit.

Delighted with his form on tour, Armstrong admitted: "Goalswise it has gone well but my fitness is the most important thing. It's the first full pre-season I've had in three years and I just want to get through it and look forward to the new season.

"It's a bonus to get the goals and we've had plenty of other opportunitites as well. The team is supplying chances and all the strikers on the tour have scored goals, which is a good thing. It's a good sign for the start of the season, that we're all finding the net. Scoring goals gives you confidence and all 4 strikers should have that."

After relying on Armstrong and Steffen Iversen for the majority of last season, manager George Graham suddenly has an embarrassment of riches up front with the arrival of L11m man Sergei Rebrov and the return to fitness of Les Ferdinand.

It should be quite a battle between the quartet for the right to start and Armstrong insist: "As long as if you are scoring goals it is done fairly and you get in the team, that's all you can ask for. I'll be doing my best and hopefully I will be one of the stikers playing."
