Anthony's two-pronged target

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Anthony Gardner has a two-pronged target to cap a memorable last month of the season.

First is a chance for the 20-year-old to pit his wits against the best in the business as Manchester United arrive at the Lane for the season’s climax on Saturday.

After the Premiership finale follows another goal — to win his first international cap.

Anthony has been called into Howard Wilkinson’s England U21squad for the friendly against Mexico on May 24 and the European Championship qualifier in Greece on June 5.

It has been quite a few weeks for the tall, elegant defender.

He came off the bench for lengthy spells against Sunderland and Chelsea and has since made successive starts against Liverpool, Villa and Leicester — impressing both team-mates, manager and media along the way.

In that time he’s faced Phillips and Quinn, Zola and Hasselbaink, Owen, Fowler and Heskey, Dublin and an in-form Sturridge.

Now comes, arguably, the biggest test — take your pick from Cole, Yorke, Sheringham and Solskjaer as United come to town.

Down to earth, Anthony takes it in his stride. “The end of the season has been good for me,” he reflected. “The gaffer has given me a chance to show what I can do and I’ve enjoyed the challenge.

“I’ve played against some top class players. We don’t know who will play for United but whoever plays I will give it my best.”

As for England, Anthony said it wasn’t that big a surprise. “I knew because I’d been playing lately that I might have a chance to be in the squad,” he added.

“It’s nice for me to get recognised and get away with the lads for a couple of weeks at the end of the season. It would be great to win my first cap as well but we’ll have to wait and see.”
