Anji vs Spurs - Andre's preview
03 October 2013|Tottenham Hotspur
Andre Villas-Boas outlined the team's target ahead of facing Anji Makhachkala in the Europa League by declaring: “We want to win.”
The aim is to build on the 3-0 win against Tromso in our Group K opener with a victory in Matchday Two at the Saturn Stadium in Ramenskoye, situated approximately 60km outside Moscow.
After facing a tough group last term - where we drew our first three matches against Lazio, Panathinaikos and Maribor - Andre is determined to book a place in the knockout phase of the competition as soon as possible this time around.
“A win would put us in a very good position going into the games against Sheriff. That’s our idea,” stated Andre after training on Wednesday night.
“If Anji win, they will go over the top of us and we want to prevent that.
“We’re in a good position after the win in the first game and now we focus on getting a win away from home.
“We had some very competitive games last season in a difficult group. The group was tight until the end and we want to avoid that late drama.”
Anji have lost a host of world-renowned talent - the likes of Samuel Eto’o, Russian internationals Yuri Zhirkov, Igor Denisov and Aleksandr Kokorin, plus coach Guss Hiddink - but Andre was quick to point out that he expects a tough test at the Saturn Stadium in Ramenskoye.
“Anji have gone through some dramatic changes in the last month but that doesn’t mean they are not a top team,” he added.
“We are aware of their strengths, we are aware that we need to be at the top of our game.
“Anji’s position in the (Russian) league is nothing to do with their position in the Europa League. In the Europa League, everything is still open and they’ve gone to Sheriff and got the draw.
“Our objective is to qualify, this is probably the most difficult away game in terms of the quality of the opponent, so we’ll try to have a good performance.”
