Anji 0-2 Spurs - Andre's Verdict
03 October 2013|Tottenham Hotspur
Andre Villas-Boas spoke of his delight after we secured a 2-0 win against Anji Makhachkala in the Europa League in Russia on Thursday night.
Two goals in five minutes in the first half did the damage at the Saturn Stadium in Ramenskoye, 60km outside Moscow.
Jermain Defoe smashed home the all-important opener on 34 minutes before Nacer Chadli’s fine finish from Kyle Walker’s cross doubled the lead.
Anji proved a tough, physical opponent, as expected, and with a tricky playing surface it was a case of ‘job done’ as we made it two wins in two in Group K.
“The conditions were difficult but we had a great first half, where we created a lot, kept the ball well and deserved the lead,” said Andre.
“Anji looked threatening on the counter, waiting for the opportunity to surprise us, so we had to be aware.
“In the second half we lost control of possession a little, Anji came out stronger and could have surprised us.
“However, defensively we were sound and managed to take a deserved win.
“A win is what we wanted, and it gives us the opportunity in the next games against Sheriff to ensure qualification. That is extremely important for us.”
