Andros England goal tops the lot!

31 December 2013|Tottenham Hotspur

Andros Townsend's debut strike for England back in October has been voted by supporters as the best goal of the Three Lions’ entire 2014 World Cup qualifying campaign.

Our all-action winger burst onto the international scene in England’s vital, penultimate qualifier against Montenegro at Wembley – capping off his Three Lions bow with a fine 25-yard strike to put Roy Hodgson’s men 3-1 up.

England went on to win the game 4-1, while Andros was also in fine form as the Three Lions sealed their place at next summer’s tournament finals in Brazil with a 2-0 home victory against Poland four days later.

The Football Association has been conducting a poll among fans as to what they felt was England’s best goal of the qualifying campaign – and Andros has emerged victorious with 29 per cent of the vote.

Also on the shortlist of 10 nominees was Liverpool’s Steven Gerrard, who finished second to Andros with 25 per cent of the vote after his strike in the aforementioned final qualifying match against Poland.

Manchester United’s Ashley Young was third, his goal against San Marino back in March claiming 11 per cent of the vote.

“My favourite, if we're talking about the quality of the strike - and there were some very good ones - was Townsend's goal,” England boss Roy Hodgson told

"This, of course, was Andros's debut goal brilliantly struck," he added. "We were pleased with that one!"
