Andros assesses Asteras win

Fri 07 November 2014, 11:05|Tottenham Hotspur

Andros Townsend conceded our second half performance wasn’t the best but as he departed Asteras Tripolis’ Theodoros Kolokotronis Stadium, he was happy to reflect on three points in the bag in the Europa League.

The winger was central to the victory in Greece. He was upended by Khalifa Sankere and dispatched the penalty for 1-0 on 36 minutes before darting to the byline and delivering the cross for Harry Kane to head home number two six minutes later.

Asteras created chances in the second half and eventually pulled a goal back in the final minute when Federico Fazio was judged to have fouled Jeronimo Barrales in the box and was sent off - Barrales slotted home from the penalty spot as it ended 2-1 in our favour.

The win left us joint-top of Group C with Besiktas and if we manage to beat Partizan Belgrade in Matchday Five at the Lane on Thursday, November 27 we’ll book a place in the knockout stage of the competition.

“It was a very good performance in the first half, we scored our goals and controlled the game,” reflected Andros, who now has two goals in the Europa League this term, both from the spot.

“In the second half for some reason we were open, they countered us too many times whereas maybe we should have been the team to keep the ball, slow the game down and hit them on the counter-attack, but it didn’t work that way.

“The main thing was to get three points and at the end of the day we did that.

“Maybe there were negatives that we’ll talk about but we’re now on eight points in the group, we need a win in our next game against Partizan and that will see us through.”

Andros was in fine form, adding: “On a personal level I was just happy to get another 90 minutes under my belt, to get an assist for Harry and to get a goal myself.

“It was nice for me and now hopefully I can take that into Sunday against Stoke if I’m called upon again.”
