Andre's praise for JD

Andre Villas-Boas paid tribute to the impact of our substitutes against City - reserving special praise for goalscorer Jermain Defoe.

Off the bench in the 70th minute, Jermain arrowed home the second goal of our fantastic three-goal spell in seven minutes that turned a 1-0 deficit into a crucial 3-1 win at the Lane on Sunday.

Fellow substitute Lewis Holtby played a key role in JD’s goal, winning the ball centrally and finding the striker in the penalty area and Tom Huddlestone, our third substitute, set-up the third goal for Gareth Bale with a sublime pass between defenders.

It was Jermain’s first goal since Boxing Day, his 15th of the season and took him level with Alan Gilzean on 133 goals in seventh on our all-time goalscoring list.

“It was fantastic for him,” said Andre. “He’s been waiting for that goal for some time.

“He has made strong contact in front of goal but goalkeepers have been making impossible saves.

“This time, he scored a fantastic goal, coming inside onto his right foot. It was excellent for him.

“Credit to the three players who came into the game, their impact was massive. That made all the difference.

“I think when players come in with this spirit from the bench, with great determination, that’s what you need.”
