Andre's praise for Etienne

09 December 2013|Tottenham Hotspur

Andre Villas-Boas was full of praise for Etienne Capoue after a fine first display in a central defensive role for us in the 2-1 win at Sunderland.

The midfielder stepped into a reshuffled defence following injuries to Jan Vertonghen and Vlad Chiriches at Fulham in midweek. Kyle Naughton excelled again at left-back.

Sunderland’s opener came against the run of play but we turned the game around with goals from Paulinho and an own goal from John O’Shea. But for a couple of scrambles, we were largely untroubled and should really have won by more.

“It was a great performance by Etienne,” said Andre. “We had to shuffle the back four completely, shift Daws to the left (of the central pairing), Naughts came in at left-back and all of them were brilliant.

"Etienne deserves credit because he was looking for a performance like that and he gave it over the 90 minutes.

“We spoke to him during the week, we all want him to succeed here and great performances like that mean he’s back on track. Everyone is extremely happy for him.”
