Andre ready for big kick-off

Andre Villas-Boas expects a game 'full of charge and emotion' as we travel to Newcastle for our Premier League opener on Saturday.

We begin our 2012-13 campaign in front of 50,000-plus at the notoriously-loud Sports Direct Arena (St James’ Park), live on ESPN, kick-off 5.30pm.

Newcastle enjoyed a fantastic 2011-12 season and were in the running for Champions League qualification right up to the last weekend of the season.

Much of their success was down to a formidable home record - just three defeats in 19 - and Andre isn’t hiding the fact that this is a tough opener for us.

“It’s very difficult, but we have our ambitions and our strengths that we’ll look to use in the game,” he said.

“It’s a different time for us, a new start and a new management team, but we all want to build from where we left off last season.

“We have to understand that to take a challenge like this through, you have go to Newcastle and try to get something there.

“Our focus will be on the three points.

“We will have to be intelligent in the way we go about our game, try to be consistent during the 90 minutes, conclude the opportunities we have and try to get the three points.

“What’s most important is that the first game of the season doesn’t reflect what you did in pre-season in any way for both teams.

“It will be a specific game full of charge and emotion, where you have to be solid and stable for 90 minutes and that’s what we are trying to do.

“If we manage to do that, if we are efficient on our chances, we can get something out of the game.”
