Andre on Lyon draw
Andre Villas-Boas says our Round of 32 tie against Olympique Lyonnais will ‘fuel the excitement’ in the Europa League.
We face the French giants in the first leg at the Lane on Thursday, February 14 before a trip to the Stade de Gerland for the second leg on Thursday, February 21.
If we are successful, we will face either Inter Milan or Cluj in the Round of 16 in March.
Lyon, who won the French title seven times on the trot between 2002-2008, finished fourth in Ligue 1 last season to qualify for the group stage of the Europa League.
They finished top of Group I unbeaten with five wins in six and a draw at Sparta Prague, who also qualified.
Lyon are currently in a share of the lead in Ligue 1 with Marseille and Paris SG and it will be a huge match for goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, who joined us from Lyon in the summer.
“It’s a big game, almost like a Champions League fixture, just like when we played Lazio,” said Andre.
“It doesn’t come much better than Lyon, with what they’ve won in the past, a club with so many trophies and so used to winning.
“It’s an exciting game so early in the competition, against a top team, and it will fuel the excitement of a big, big fixture.
“We will get the focus right leading up to that game, approach it in a confident manner and try to do our best.”
