Anderton treble gets Legends off to winning start

29 March 2016|Tottenham Hotspur

Darren Anderton netted a hat-trick as the Spurs Legends side got their 2016 season underway with a resounding 6-0 victory in Chigwell on Sunday.

Taking on a team of fans known as ‘The Boys From The Shelf’ at Colebrook Royals FC, the former England international got the ball rolling in the first half with a long-range free-kick, with his side going up through the gears after the break to register a big win.

A heavy downpour in the opening 15 minutes made for a cagey start and a handful of chances were spurned before the eventual breakthrough.

Mark Falco drilled wide after Mark Stimson knocked Mark Gower’s corner down into his path on 23 minutes, John Lacy’s header was tipped over – although the referee subsequently pulled play back for a foul in the box – while Paul McVeigh and Anderton were both narrowly off-target before the latter’s 30-yard free-kick dipped at the last moment and squirmed under the goalkeeper to give the Legends the lead on the half-hour mark.

Andy Edmonds fired over the bar when well placed seven minutes after half-time before the second goal arrived on 59 minutes. Kevin Watson sent Falco racing into the area, he was tackled and the ball ran loose to McVeigh (pictured, below), who chipped the goalkeeper from the edge of the box.

Anderton made it 3-0 from the penalty spot on 62 minutes after being bundled over six yards from goal and, after Falco’s rising free-kick cleared the wall and forced a save from the goalkeeper, the midfielder completed his treble midway through the second half with a back-post tap-in following Gower’s ball across from the right.

Watson could have added to the scoreline two minutes later but he hit the post with his penalty after McVeigh was brought down, but it was 5-0 on 72 minutes when Gower exchanged passes with McVeigh before surging into the box and crashing a shot low into the far corner.

Watson then fired wide from distance before clipping the ball into the left channel for substitute Aaron Chinery to complete the scoring with a fine volley across the goalkeeper 14 minutes from time.

Spurs Legends: Gareth Howells, John Lacy (Aaron Chinery 60), Mark Falco (Pete Falco 72), Kevin Watson, Stuart Nethercott, Andy Edmonds, Mark Gower, Brian Statham, Paul McVeigh, Darren Anderton, Mark Stimson. Substitute (not used): David Howells.

The Legends are back in action this Sunday (April 3) at Ware FC in Hertfordshire.

Kick-off is at 2pm and tickets will be available on the turnstiles.
