'An emotional moment' - Mauricio on Monaco
Wed 14 September 2016, 17:00|Tottenham Hotspur
Mauricio Pochettino has seen most things in football, but he admits even he’ll be emotional when he hears the Champions League anthem for the first time at Wembley Stadium, connected by EE.
We return to European football’s top table with a Group E opener against AS Monaco in front of a new record home attendance, with tonight’s figure overtaking our long-standing mark of 75,038 set in 1938. Kick-off is 7.45pm and we advise fans to arrive as early as possible.
Mauricio is well aware of this moment in the Club’s history.

A player who reached the heights of World Cup finals selection with Argentina in 2002, Mauricio has thought about how he will feel when he walks out.
“It will be very emotional because it’s the first time I will play in the Champions League,” he said. “You cannot imagine this moment, but I’m sure it will be emotional and fantastic to share with our supporters at a place like Wembley.
“It’s exciting for all of us. It was a challenge two years ago when we arrived at Tottenham to give our fans a big competition like the Champions League and when we achieved it last season it was fantastic.
“It’s fantastic for the Club, for us and for a lot of players it’s the first time they’ve played in the Champions League as well. It’s a very good thing for us. Now, we have to try to play, to enjoy, to play better than our opponents and try to win games to get into the next round.”

Although naturally excited, the message from the players has been ‘we’re in it to compete’ - and that is music to Mauricio’s ears.
“When you achieve the Champions League, the next challenge is always to get into the next round. First of all, we need to win games. Okay, we’re all excited to play but at the same time, we’re all focused on playing and trying to beat Monaco.”
