'All we're trying to do is win the next game' - Mauricio previews Everton

Mauricio Pochettino isn't looking at records, just the next game.

We go into Sunday's cracker against in-form Everton as the only team with an unbeaten home record in the Premier League.

We've won 11 and drawn two of 13 so far and were last held by Leicester City in October. Indeed, we're now on eight successive league wins at the Lane and victory against Everton will set a record of nine in the Premier League era.

Throw in just five goals conceded in those 13 games and there is a lot to be proud about.

"All we’re trying to do is win the next game," said Mauricio. "Maybe in the future we’ll say ‘what a good run’ but today, we need to focus on the next day, to win the next game and to keep our position in the table. That’s our challenge."

The next challenge is a big one. Ronald Koeman's team are unbeaten in nine and have kept five clean sheets in their last seven.

"Everton are doing well, they have very good players and it’s a tough game for us," said Mauricio, who expects an open, attacking game despite both teams' defensive strength. "The style of Everton is to play football along the grass and they are very dynamic team, I’m sure it will be an open game."

After a bust spell, you've had a clear week this week with the players, how has it been?
Mauricio: "It’s been a good week training in a very good atmosphere after the victory against Stoke. It’s been a good week to work on principles and fresh concepts and spend time all together again on the training ground."

Were even you surprised by the energy in the performance in the first half against Stoke after all the effort the team put into recent games, not least playing with 10 men for 50 minutes at Wembley just three days before?
Mauricio: "No, there are no surprises in football, everything can happen if you are ready to compete and we were ready to compete against Stoke. Football is about emotion and your mental state and it was important to be 100 per cent and to give our best.

"Now we start a different period. We’re involved in the Premier League and FA Cup, two competitions, we have more of a gap between games to try to improve, to work and develop different ideas. At the same time, now we have a big responsibility because we’re in a position where we need to win games. We have a big possibility to win on Sunday and to keep our position in the table but at the same time, we play against a tough opponent."
