Alfie in form in Under-17 World Cup opener

18 October 2015|Tottenham Hotspur

Our young goalkeeper Alfie Whiteman made a series of fine saves for England Under-17s as they opened their FIFA Under-17 World Cup campaign with a 1-1 draw with Guinea in Coquimbo, Chile on Saturday night (October 17).

The stopper started the game for the Young Lions along with attacking midfielder Marcus Edwards and, after the latter had been denied from the penalty spot by Guinea keeper Moussa Camara, the 17-year-old came up with a number of key interventions to keep the west African side at bay.

He denied Jules Keita with his legs, before keeping out Yamodoe Toure’s effort with a fantastic one-handed save just seconds later to ensure the sides went in level at the break.

And he was at it again in the second half, making a one-on-one save from Ives Camara after a swift Guinea breakaway.

Arsenal’s Kaylen Hinds subsequently headed England into the lead on 61 minutes, but Naby Bangoura replied 13 minutes from time as the points were shared in Group B.

Alfie completed the full game, Kazaiah Sterling was introduced as a substitute on 84 minutes while Marcus was withdrawn four minutes later.

Next up for England is a clash with Brazil on Tuesday, October 20.
