Al aims for Czech mate

English Barclays Premiership

Allan Nielsen is aiming for a big finish after Denmark's disappointing Euro2000 campaign. Our workaholic midfielder is expected to be named in the Danish side to take on the Czech Republic in the final Group D match in Liege on Wednesday night. Both teams have already been eliminated after losing to France and Holland in their opening matches.

Worthington Cup 1999 hero Nielsen admitted: "We knew before the tournament began that we were in a very difficult group. We knew it would be hard and obviously that is how it has turned out.

"But we are also playing the Czech Republic in our qualifying campaign for the 2002 World Cup, so this is a very important game for us."

Despite competing well for long periods of both matches, Denmark were beaten 3-0 by both France and Holland. "They were more or less the same type of games," said the 29-year-old. "The results don't look good and it looks like we've fallen apart both times but in both games, we played well in the first half."

The disappointing results make the tournament all the harder for players away from matches and training.

"We've been away for three weeks when you include training camp and the only thing that helps that situation is winning games," he added. "It has been more positive that that though. Social-wise it has been fine and we have no problems being together as a squad, but you do miss your family after a while."
