Academy Watch

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

It was a mixed weekend for our Academy sides - the under-19s secured full points at Coventry, while the under-17s suffered disappointment at home to Leicester.

Coventry 2-4 Spurs

The under-19s fell behind to a first half goal at Coventry, but second half goals from Marcel McKie, Mark Hughes and two from Jamie Slabber secured a deserved victory for Pat Holland's side.

Pat takes up the story...

"We started off quite brightly and we created, I thought, three excellent chances - of which I would have liked to have thought one would go in!

"Unfortunately they didn't and we paid the price. They got a cross in, we didn't defend it particularly well and their striker got a free header.

"So we went in at half-time a goal down. I felt that the way they were playing we were always likely to get something out of the game as long as we didn't concede another goal straight away.

"We pulled one straight back with a good individual goal from Marcel McKie, where he beat three players and got himself into the box.

"This was followed up by Mario Noto getting behind their back four, putting a cross in for Jamie Slabber to get a header to put us 2-1 up.

"I brought for the last 20 to steady us down a little bit just in case. He scored as soon as he came on. Mark Yeates got in down the right and squared it back for him.

"Then we shot ourselves in the foot by conceding a daft goal after we had two opportunities to clear and got caught in possession.

"Facing a last ten minutes that I thought was going to be a little bit hairy, we went right back down the other end and scored again through Slabber.

"So, in fairness, I thought we won the game quite comfortably and deserved a victory."

Team: Burch, Perry, McKie, Black, Bowditch, Dobson, Yeates, Noto, Slabber, Wettner, Ford (Hughes 70).

Spurs 1-4 Leicester

Our Academy under-17 side suffered a defeat against Leicester at Spurs Lodge after taking the lead through Michael Malcolm.

It was a performance that left coach Jimmy Neighbour frustrated and seeking a great improvement.

Jimmy takes up the story...

"A very disappointing morning. It started off as an even game; both teams looked quite sharp and passed the ball well.

"After about 15 minutes we had a good build up on the right, Owen Price put the ball in the box and Michael Malcolm got across the front of his defender and scored a good goal.

"They equalised a little while after that where we defended poorly. At that stage we began to go on the back foot, we weren't denying them space and were allowing them to play in front of us.

"They levelled and we went in at half-time at 1-1 in an even-ish match.

"In the second half we didn't compete at all and it was very disappointing. We defended poorly in certain area and it is something we've got to improve on.

"The lads know what they've got to do to put that right. They've got to pass the ball better as well and not give the ball away so cheaply.

"They've also got to become more of a team. We've got a few individual players there that aren't bad, but it's a team game as well and they've got to learn to get around each other a little bit more and become more difficult to beat. In particular they've got to improve their defending.

"They've got to be able to fight right through and play for pride if necessary. We've had a long chat and hopefully they will react to that and we'll see some better results or performances in the future."

Team: Eyre, Ifil, Jenkins (Daniels 75), Hicks (Barcham 65), Hodges, Watson, Lee (Francis 65), McKenna, Malcolm, Price, Welsh.
