XXI International Youth Tournament, San Sebastian, Spain

Group Stage (matches 35mins each way)

Real Madrid 2-1 Spurs

Coach Pat Holland had few complaints as our Academy team lost out against Real Madrid to finish third in the group stage of the XXI International Youth Tournament in Spain.

All the goals came in the first half as Madrid took the lead after 15 minutes, Jamie O'Hara followed up a save from his own penalty to level before the Spanish side hit what turned out to be the winner a minute before the break.

Coach Pat reported: "We started again with Chris Riley at centre-half, Kieran McKenna right-back and Andy Barcham wide right as it worked so well against Osasuna.

"To be honest though we started slowly, Real Madrid were the better side and looked more dangerous.

"They took the lead with a decent goal but not the greatest for us defensively, they managed to get behind the back four, the lad got in and to be fair, slotted it away well.

"We responded well, picked our game up and got back into it with what I might describe as a 'fortuitous' penalty. Chris Riley went up for a corner, got a bit of a shove and the referee awarded it. Jamie O'Hara (pictured left) took it, had his shot saved but stuck away the rebound.

"Things were going okay but we then got caught a minute before the break, basically poor defending again and that was a bit of a blow.

"We changed it around at half-time not just wanting to get back into it but also to give everyone a run. John Kyriacou came on and Charlie Daniels also had his first game after an ankle injury.

"We didn't create too much though and I threw Jamie Davis and Archibald Troy on with 15 minutes left but it wasn't to be. At least everyone had a run out in the tournament apart from the young goalkeeper Adam Holloway and three schoolboys played against Real Madrid and that's great experience for them at that age."

Spurs: Forecast, Riley (Kyriacou, 35), Wright, Lewis (Davis, 55), McKenna, Lee (Troy, 55), Maghoma, Dawkins, Barcham, O'Hara, Hamed (Daniels, 35). Unused sub: Holloway.
