U18 Academy North
FA PREMIER ACADEMY LEAGUE
Sunderland U18 2-1 Spurs U18
It was frustration for Pat Holland and his players after our Under-18s dictated their FAPAL opener for long periods only to leave the north-east without reward.
After missing a host of chances they were hit by two goals in as minutes as Sunderland went 2-0 up at the break.
A spirited response saw Andy Barcham (pictured left) pull a goal back but it wasn't to be.
Coach Pat takes up the story: "We made a tremendous start, very bright, got into some good areas and had some great chances.
Credit the Sunderland goalkeeper but sometimes I think you have to look at your own technique as players as well, not just give him the credit. We should have scored and that's end of story.
"They eventually went down our left-hand side, ball crossed in and the lad stuck in a good header, top corner and two minutes later a ball played over the top, a bit of indecision and suddenly we're two down.
"It was unbelievable really. Two minutes before half-time we got a free-kick, Charlie Daniels hit the post, it bounced to safety and you're thinking 'we might as well go home now'.
"Give the lads credit though. We had a chat ah half-time, I told them to keep their heads up and they had another go at it.
We had more chances, not quite as clear-cut this time and eventually Andy Barcham scored and we were back in it but we couldn't get a second.
Overall, we all knew we should have come back with something but finishing is an area we've got to work hard at. Hopefully it won't be a recurring situation because it can be very frustrating for both players and coaches."
