Aaron on Ledley - 'the player, the man, the leader'
Thu 08 May 2014, 09:11|Tottenham Hotspur
Aaron Lennon will always be thankful for how Ledley King helped him settle into Spurs after his big move from Leeds United as an 18-year-old.
The flying winger joined us in July, 2005, just as Ledley was starting to establish himself both as the club's captain and leader and one of the best central defenders of his era.
They went on to play together for seven years, both playing major roles in our League (Carling) Cup triumph of 2008 and our qualification for the Champions League for the 2010-11 campaign.
Ledley retired in 2012 and Aaron is now one of the longest-serving players at the club with 347 appearances in all competitions.
He will be in action again for the first team squad in Ledley's Testimonial on Monday, as Ledley returns to the Lane with his Guest XI.
“I’ve brilliant memories of Ledley, not just as a player but as a man and a leader here at Spurs," said Aaron.
"When I first came down to the club as an 18-year-old from Leeds, he was one of the first who looked after me and helped me to settle. He was always great with the young players and over time we became good friends.
"Needless to say, he was an unbelievable footballer, for me probably the best centre-half I’ve ever seen in the game.
"I remember clearly when we won the Carling Cup, afterwards in the dressing room I’d never seen him so happy. You could see how much it meant to him and he fully deserved that medal for the man he is and the player he was.
"It will be a special occasion and I’m looking forward to it. It will be great to see so many old faces back again and the fact so many have turned up shows you just how much Ledley was appreciated by his team-mates."
